Takao Minami is one of the artists included in “19th DOMANI - The Art of Tomorrow,” a Japanese Government Agency for Cultural Affairs sponsored exhibition at The National Art Center, Tokyo. In conjunction with the event, Ota Fine Arts is hosting “Difference Between,” which marks Minami’s 4th solo exhibition at this venue.
“Difference Between” (2014) is a dual-channel video work composed of sounds and video footage recorded by the artist in the Malay Peninsula. The artwork title, “Difference Between,” reflects Minami’s recent interest in exploring the transformation of scenery as seen from multiple locations. In this work he re-composes images taken from various viewpoints into a smooth continuation of changing images. For the video images, Minami has captured forms and movements by reducing the color and light scales so that they resemble the color bars of old-fashioned ‘8-Bit Era’ television and video. Similarly, the soundtrack has been created by the re-duplication of ordinary sounds recorded on location. The two screens gradually scroll from bottom to top, at times synchronizing and other times shifting out of time. By joining various images with effectively placed blank spaces, the continuous flow of sounds and images illustrates the Malay Peninsula in a presentation vastly different from the conventional documentary style. It will be the first time this video installation has been shown in Japan.
