Artists

Yuriko Sasaoka
Yuriko Sasaoka is an artist working in moving image. Her films consist of puppets with blank faces upon which are pasted the image of actual human faces, whilst also utilizing CG effects for the movement of the face, feet and hands. This combination of low & high-tech creates a world in which we see not only familiar figures but also something we have never seen before. The unpredictable story urges the viewers to actively commit in thoughts and understanding of the work. Her works Anima(2014) Anima and Atom (2015) received a number of acclaimed awards, including ‘Special Prize’ at the Taro Okamoto for Contemporary Art in 2016 for the latter. Icarus’s Bride is a video installation which references the Greek myth of Daedalus, the inventor who created the labyrinth which held the minotaur, and Icarus, his son who escaped with him from entrapment only to fly too close to the sun. In the artist’s unique rendition she herself plays the bride doll of the title whilst the two figures of Icarus and Daedalus are much larger, and they are moved by stagehands which wear ox-like costume, reminding us of Minotaur. The unique melody and energetic lyrics sung by Yoriko mixes with other characters and the story line, weaving a narrative of numerous meanings and drawing the audience into a dialogue in which reality and the fantasy are in complete harmony.
