Artists

Chong Ri Ae, Jong YuGyong, Lee JongOk
Chong Ri Ae, Jong YuGyong and Lee JongOkwere all born in 1991 and bred in Japan. After receiving their B. A. from Korea University in Tokyo, they continued to take Tokyo as their base. The word ”Zainichi” literally means a resident in Japan but it usually indicates people of North or South Korean descent living in Japan. Japanese people use the word with disturbing supposition, reflecting social and political problems, constraints of language and habitual practices. These three artists have grown up across these two cultures of Japanese and Korean.
Some might say that international cultural exchange allows for the sharing of different perspectives, yet at the same time these differences can also lead to ethnic conflict. These artists are the third generation from the first ‘Zainichi’ immigrants, and they experienced the both exchange and conflict in their everyday lives. As an artist, each of them is able to visualize a new and a fresh image from their circumstances, the society and the history. The three artists have recently cooperated with the students of Musashino Art University, the neighbor of the Korea University in Tokyo and here represented their position in the present Japan, the friction and the discord within their own community and culture creates a focus of their work.
Is there a universal art in this world? There is no man who is accepted from all the others equally. Art can be claimed to function in a way of allowing tolerance between these differences of the interpretation, opening our eyes and questioning what we mean by diversity. In this exhibition, the three artists will feature approx. ten recent paintings, video and mixed-media artworks.
