Finished

Artists

Shoji Ohtake
Displaying some 30 photographs by Shoji Ohtake, including previously unreleased “flower” images and major works with women as their subjects. Ohtake, whose death in July 2015 is still fresh in memory, was fond of the Cole Porter song “Begin the Beguine.”

When they begin the beguine
It brings back the sound of music so tender
It brings back a night of tropical splendor
It brings back a memory evergreen

As described in these lyrics, Ohtake strove for an eternally fresh “evergreen” quality in his photographs. People and flowers both eventually wither and fade. For this very reason, Ohtake wanted to capture the shining moments of their lives. His works are filled with this ambition.
