Tadanori Yokoo

In this exhibition Tadanori Yokoo has added elements of his own unique world to the works of various artists. A self-taught artist, his interest in art began when he was five years old and copied a picture of the samurai swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi, from a picture book published by Kodansha. He continues to include a wide range of images in his work and it can be said that the true essence of his work lies in ‘appropriation’. In particular, his experience of seeing the Pablo Picasso: A Retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1980 was so influential on him that it led to him taking up painting.
This exhibition will present numerous works that express respect and the esprit of other artists, introducing the art cosmos of a single painter that surpasses time and space. The works that provide the base for these paintings are by such artists as Picasso, Duchamp, de Chirico, Picabia, etc. Confronted with the great artists and masterpieces of their times, he opens his heart, revealing his ambivalence, humor and sometimes criticism, expressing his convictions and the joy he receives from painting. Through this communion with the great masters we aim to draw nearer to the central core of Yokoo’s art, and we hope that you will also be able to enjoy learning about the history of art.
In addition to this theme, he also takes a commercially available car and uses it to create an ‘art car’ that is displayed in the exhibition. Following on from the wrapping of trains on the JR Kakogawa line, it marks the second appearance of his ‘mobile art’.
