Mamoru Oshii
The National Film Center is currently hosting a series titled “His Own Selection” that showcases the work of contemporary Japanese directors active from the 1980s onward. In attempting to explore the origins of contemporary Japanese cinema, it offers directors the chance to reflect on their journey in film, from cinematic debut to present day. The directors focused on in the series so far are Yoichi Sai, Kazuki Omori, Kazuyuki Izutsu, and Kichitaro Negishi. Mamoru Oshii, known for the animated feature “Ghost in the Shell” (1995) and his subsequent influence upon directors such as James Cameron and The Wachowskis, will be the fifth in the series. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of animation in Japan in 2017, this program of screenings will examine the work of this director who creates original films that fuse live action and animation.
