Tomoo Seki
This exhibition will present two series by artist Tomoo Seki: “Real/Red,” which depicts Asian plants in cadmium pigments, and the more recent “Blue-and-White,” which makes use of azurite mineral pigment. For the “Real/Red” series, he has used an overhead projector to paint flowers and blossoms as motifs that represent Japan. In contrast, the flowers in Seki’s latest series, “Blue-and-White,” were drawn directly in front of the natural landscape. Gold leaf is also applied to the matte framing of the “Blue-and-White” drawings to create a combination of azurite and gold leaf that was common in paneled paintings of the Momoyama Period (1573–1615). Keen to express the splendor of the Momoyama aesthetic, Seki employs these decorative techniques in a contemporary setting. Get a sense of how this artist explores whether it is possible for localized methods of expression to provide a common ground for viewers around the world.
