Mihoko Tsujita
Located only 50 km north of Hokkaido, the town of Esutoru in South Sakhalin (Karafuto in Japanese) was part of Japan until 1949. It is also the hometown of photographer Mihoko Tsujita’s grandmother, and in 2010 the pair journeyed there for a visit. Tsujita explains, “I have no memories of Esutoru, so I can’t help but wonder why I feel so compelled by it.” This trip about memory has gradually changed form over the past five years, with time continuing to elapse.

The “direction of photography” is a popular theme, and this exhibition is the first in a series of three exploring why photographers take an interest in and document the subjects they do.
