Mizuya Mizuzuka: Shelter on Elevated Ground― Traditional Flood Prevention Wisdom

LIXIL Gallery 1 & 2
Finished
In the past, evacuation sites known as mizuya and mizuzuka were built in regions with frequent flooding, and these structures became unique features of the local landscapes. Focusing on photographs of mizuya and mizuzuka that remain in flood zones across the country, this exhibition features some 60 displays including architectural models and farming tools. It re-examines Japan’s unique ways of living with rivers by building sites incorporating “traditional river technologies” that drew on the wisdom of the people.
