Eugène Carrière
This is an exhibition of works by Eugène Carrière (born 1849, died 1906), one of the quintessential 19th Century French Symbolist artists, known for his depictions of people and mother-and-child scenes that appear to float hauntingly on the paintings’ sepia-toned surfaces. This exhibition is being held 110 years after the artist’s death thanks to the full-fledged cooperation of art historian Véronique Nora-Milin, who is Carrière’s great-grandchild and the editor of Carrière’s catalogue raisonné, and it presents around 80 of Carrière’s works, chiefly oil paintings and works from private collections. The works being exhibited cover a variety of subject matter, including those typical of Carrière such as mother-and-child scenes and everyday scenes that unfold in daily life, as well as portraits of his wife, children and prominent figures, and landscapes, which are rare in Carrière’s works. The exhibition captures the essence of Carrière, who depicted intimate scenes with a dreamlike quality.
