Hemp Kimono, Silk Kimono

Bunka Gakuen Costume Museum
Finished
Japanese people have used hemp and silk as materials for making clothes since ancient times, as is known from items that have been excavated from Jomon and Yayoi period remains, as well as from descriptions in the Chinese text “Gishiwajinden (The History of the Wei Dynasty).” Hemp grows well in the hot and humid Japanese climate, while in Japan silkworms are also easy to nurture. This exhibition will trace the process by which hemp and silk become threads which are then woven into fabric that eventually becomes kimono. It will look at the characteristics of each material and their connection with various dyeing techniques.
