Yamatane Museum of Art was first opened in 1966 and went on to establish the Yamatane Museum of Art Award for Nihonga in 1971, running every year up until 1997. To celebrate the 50 year anniversary of the museum the Award has been updated to contemporary times and presents 40 recommended pieces selected from an open call, along with 12 award winning works.
