Maiko Jinushi
Jinushi claims to be “creating a new style of literature,” and in recent years, she has been expanding the possibilities of video art by involving viewers in her video production process. The video artwork exhibited in this show was shot during her stay in Chiang Mai, Thailand, upon an outdoor stage arranged with white tiles. In the video, a Thai woman, one of her acquaintances, stands on the stage with bare feet and has a dialogue with the artist while being filmed, alone. While bearing in mind that both Japan and Thailand are the countries under politically complex situations, Jinushi daringly poses questions based on an abstract theme, “love.” Although the video can be understood as a documentary work recorded by several cameras while combining elements of performance art, such as the placement of flowers on the stage in the middle of the video, this moving image composed of words woven from the depths of individuality and poetic, fantastical sceneries provides viewers a mysterious elation as if reading through a story.
