Saki Murakami
The simple and naïve lines that characterize Saki Murakami’s copperplate prints render a generalized depiction of their subjects. Devoid of particular or unique qualities, the forms she illustrates become symbolic in nature. Murakami’s lines are drawn directly into the surface of the plate with no preparatory sketches. As a result, her works can have a clumsy or unrefined appearance – they do not appear polished or retouched. This approach values the spontaneous directness of drawing, rather than the superficial perfection of forms. Though the procedure of producing print media necessitates various stages, such as corrosion and printing, Murakami succeeds in allowing her self-expression to resonate through each layer of the process. In this way printmaking becomes a method by which the reality of human expression can be articulated.
This exhibition will showcase numerous prints by the artist.
