In order to foster upcoming artists and support them in becoming future leaders of the Japanese art world, the Agency for Cultural Affairs created “Program of Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists” in 1967, which provides an opportunity for budding artists to study at universities and art organizations abroad. The “Domani: The Art of Tomorrow” exhibition series was established in 1998 to present the program’s achievements and will be commemorating its 19th anniversary this year, while the program itself is soon to celebrate its 50th anniversary. In addition to the large-scale group exhibition that takes place at National Art Center, Tokyo, “Domani Plus” was launched in 2015. These two projects are designed as the second stage of the development program for upcoming artists run by the agency.
The 19th Domani Exhibition will focus on showcasing the work of artists who have recently completed their overseas study. Making use of the large space at National Art Center, Tokyo, the lineup of artists will present works that make use of a variety of materials, including painting, photography, video, animation, installation, ceramics, media art, and so on. With works gathered under the loose theme “re_consider Japan,” this will be a valuable opportunity to take a fresh look at Japan as “2020” fast approaches.
