Kumiko Otomo
In her last exhibition, Bambinart Gallery displayed work by Kumiko Otomo exploring the soul within the void of despair, created by suffering and conflict. This is Otomo’s core concept, shaped by her underlying existential thoughts. These fundamentals of her work manifest again in this exhibition, but this time the artwork is focused on the willful negligence, which translates to “Mihitsu no Koi” in Japanese. The surrealism Otomo felt after the New York terrorist attacks and the 2011 earthquake in Japan, which she hasn’t actually experienced, combined with her distant feelings toward her hometown of Fukushima and about family relationships – are frequently found in her new works. Otomo produced the works in this exhibition as she embraced a sense of continuously expanding physical and psychological distance after 10 years of living in New York. Previously unfinished pieces, which she has since further refined, are also displayed.
