The Toguri Collection: The Original Exhibition

Toguri Museum of Art
Finished
The Toguri Museum of Art was founded in 1987 as one of the few museums in the world dedicated to porcelain. Its core collection of fine Asian porcelain was assembled by businessman Tohru Toguri, who began collecting and preserving household items before the great changes in lifestyle that took place in post-war Japan. In the process, he developed a particular interest in old porcelain, and became a serious collector. The massive collection Toguri assembled was shared with the public for the first time from November 1984 to January 1985 in a special exhibition held at the Shoto Museum in Tokyo’s Shibuya district. Titled “Arita Ware from the Toguri Collection: Imari, Kakiemon, Nabeshima,” the exhibition featured more than 100 pieces and was praised for demonstrating both the internationalization and diversity that characterize Arita ware. As a prelude to our museum’s 30th anniversary next year, this show will bring together once again the same works from that original exhibition. Looking back at the museum’s history, this collection will share the masterpieces of Arita ware with today’s museum goers.
