Artists

Shunsuke Nouchi
Materials from a time different than his own are an important element in Shunsuke Nouchi’s creative process. By applying objects such as pieces of broken furniture to sculptures “repaired” with temporary materials like cellophane tape, or skillfully adding layer upon layer of paint to old canvases, he disguises the passage of time inherent in these materials. Aged sections and new paint coats coexist in works created in a process of continuously concealing and revealing the broken and the repaired. In this exhibition Nouchi presents works made from title-less paintings he has acquired, to which he has added layers of paint before tearing away at the old and new surfaces to unveil surprising scenes.
