Daido Moriyama Exhibition

Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre
Finished

Artists

Daido Moriyama
Daido Moriyama captured the faces of Ikebukuro and other Tokyo neighborhoods with a unique photographic aesthetic. The Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, located near Moriyama’s workplace, now presents a show of his work that is not simply a “photography exhibition,” but turns its entire space into a stage for Moriyama, letting visitors fully experience his world of images in an unconventional setting.

Ikebukuro is an endlessly vibrant place frequented by all kinds of people. Its atmosphere changes daily, so much so that these alterations can be difficult to perceive. Like the rest of Tokyo, however, it is undergoing transformation. Moriyama, who has been photographing Ikebukuro for half a century, states “I sense in my days here signs of yet-unknown times and scenes to come in the nooks and crannies of these city streets.” (From “The Past is Always New and the Future is Forever Nostalgic”). The changes we feel in his photographs evoke not only the past and present, but the future, too.
