The Return of Hokusai

The Sumida Hokusai Museum
Finished

Artists

Hokusai Katsushika et al.
The world-famous Ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was born in Tokyo’s Sumida Ward and spent nearly all of his 90 years here producing his iconic works. This exhibition celebrates Hokusai’s “return” to Sumida in two senses of the word: First, his rare work “Sumidagawa Ryogan Keshiki Zukan” (Landscape Scroll of Scenery at Both Banks of the Sumida River) is repatriated to Japan after being lost for more than a century; Second, with this exhibition at a museum dedicated to him, Hokusai is given a “homecoming” along with his masterpieces. Approximately 120 of Hokusai’s works are displayed in this two-part show.

Part 1: Nov. 22 (Tues)–Dec. 18 (Sun)
Part 2: Dec. 20 (Tues)–Jan. 15 (Sun)
*Exhibited works alternated between Part 1 and Part 2.
