Artists

Mari Katayama
Mari Katayama began working as an artist after winning an award at Gunma Youth Biennale ‘05 while still a high school student. After graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School in 2012, she was awarded the Grand Prix at Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi 2012. The following year, she presented a large-scale installation using video at Aichi Triennale 2013. After losing both legs at the age of nine due to a congenital limb disease, Katayama has spent her life using prosthetic limbs. In her sculptural works and self-portraits, she makes use of prosthetic limbs modeled on her own body, continuing to build the relationship between her body, her spirit and the world. This exhibition will expand on the works that Katayama presented in her solo exhibition, “Bystander,” held on Naoshima Island last year as part of Setouchi Triennale 2016. You will have a chance to view these works alongside self-portraits taken on the banks of the Tone River and the Watarase River, where Katayama spent her childhood growing up.
