Takayuki Ito works with a tempera painting method that combines pigments dispersed in an egg yolk solution with gold foil backgrounds. There is mystique and a ritualistic nature inherent to this manual process. His paintings caricature confusion around the body in contemporary Japanese society while also expressing attempts to rebuild the elegance and stark beauty of the spirit central to the martial arts that the Japanese have regarded as virtuous.
