Akali:The Art of Designing Light in Japan

Musashino Art University Museum & Library
Finished
Until Western technologies were imported in the mid nineteenth century, lighting had developed in Japan on its own path for over a thousand years. Japanese culture and natural features are combined in technologies using fire for illumination. The abundant forms of lighting thus created are unrivaled throughout the world. This exhibition based on our collection gives a bird’s-eye view of Japanese lighting as a whole and presents the essence of Japanese lighting and its design.
