Ryota Shimamoto “Living Funeral”

Eitoeiko
Finished

Artists

Ryota Shimamoto
Ryota Shimamoto’s works include paintings, ceramics, photographs, sculptures, and performances. He has been heavily influenced by the philosophy of Shusaku Arakawa, a contemporary artist who attempted to avoid the death. From the point of view of Buddhism, if a man died, he would not to have to think about death anymore. Shimamoto considers a living funeral as a ceremony to obtain eternal life. Here he presents previous art he has deemed appropriate for his funeral and a series of new works including “Hair Brush,” “My Contaminated Water,” and others.
