The element of the fantastic may be discerned in many aspects of life. If we look up to the sky we might detach ourselves from the earth, and be captured by the sights of the moon and clouds, drawing us into another world. The tales of the gods and Buddha, history and myth, distant lands which were thought impossible to see in the Edo period, were also embodiments of the fantastic. This exhibition locates the wondrous and bewildering in the familiar things which surround us from the perspective of Edo painters and printmakers in a selection of 160 works.
