Masako Shirasu et al.
Masako Shirasu (1910-1998) is an author that passed on her unique aesthetic sensibilities through her words. For Shirasu, kimonos were a crucial part of any discussion about beauty or aesthetics, as is evident in the extensive writing that survives her. Looking to link the skill of the artisan together with the creativity of the creator, she opened “Kogei,” a dye shop in Ginza, at the age of 46. From here she deepened exchanges between weavers and dye producers while spreading the word about the beauty of kimono to the rest of the world. Shirasu was also passionate about Noh theater and antiques, incorporating these into her writing and daily life. She would often wear a kimono herself, whether it was while handling antiques at home or when tacking a manuscript.
In this exhibition there will be around 150 items on display, including the kimono that Shirasu wore on stage as a Noh performer as well as the obi that she inherited from her mother. There will also be various seasonal accessories as well as everyday objects from her life. Enjoy this opportunity to experience the beauty of these items that Shirasu treasured so much.
