Madsaki ”Wannabie’s Collection”

Clear Gallery Tokyo

Artists

Madsaki
Through his solo exhibition in 2015 “Wannabie’s”, the artist played a role of a “wannabe” artist who had the idea of making a name in the art world by copying already famous art works. This year the same wannabe artist created his own top-class art work collection.
All the pieces included in this exhibition are copies / re-makes of key museum works, or are works that were in the center of art-gossip. Following the steps of his precursors who appropriated mass produced images into their art, Madsaki also has been ironically implying the image of the “art world” this past year.
This exhibition also portrays the artist’s complex feeling towards collectors who are the top players in this industry, with respect, fear and envy. Here you will feel a sense of sorrow for Madsaki who re-paints the works of other painters he loves, works he will probably never be able to purchase. Through his rough copies which can not even be called a counterfeit, the artist questions the contradiction of originality, and shows a subtle resistance towards the dramatic situation of record prices making the headline news.
Madsaki once again confronts us with the questions “Can this be called contemporary art? Or is it just simply a prank?”, “Is this beautiful?” or “Is this original?” juddering our stereotypical thoughts on art..
