Witch belief and witch persecutions, the result of fear of their demonic work, was a specific phenomenon of early modern Europe. During this period, people lived in a world filled with magic and superstitions as science had yet to be introduced. Life was also extremely difficult; wars raged over Europe and society was shattered by religious conflicts compounded with severe climate which destroyed harvest. Many suffered and died. For those who survived, it was clear these tragedies were the demonic deeds of “witches”.

But how can one identify a witch?
A ruthless system of questioning and torture was invented by scholars and attorneys. For more than 200 years the European regions, mainly the German Empire, were hit by several waves of witch hysteria and persecution. How could this have occurred? Why did people believe in witches and the devil? These are questions to be answered in this unique exhibition.
