Artists

Tetsuya Nagata
Contemporary artist Tetsuya Nagata is best known for his series “Kiokugami - Paper Sweets,” which is comprised of Japanese paper that has been shaped using molds that are normally used in the production of traditional Japanese sweets. It is custom in Japan that such sweets, which have motifs such as fish and rabbits, are offered as celebratory gifts for special occasions, including weddings and coming-of-age ceremonies. In his work, Nagata shapes handmade Japanese paper, which has a beauty similar to that of silk and is designated as an intangible cultural property in Ibaraki Prefecture, with wooden molds. By pushing past memories into these molds, Nagata recalls a sense of nostalgia, located in the warm texture of the paper and the detail of the reliefs. These contemporary manifestations reconfirm the height of Japanese aesthetics.
