Collection Exhibition: Okamoto Taro & Artists of the Avant-garde

Taro Okamoto Museum of Art, Kawasaki
Finished

Artists

Taro Okamoto, Tatsuo Ikeda, Shozo Kitadai et al.
Taro Okamoto was no one’s student or disciple within the art world, working throughout his career as a solitary figure who stood on his own, much like his Tower of the Sun at the site of Osaka’s Expo ’70. And yet, among postwar Japanese artists, there is probably no other who believed as sincerely in uniting his own powers with those of his contemporaries to blaze the way for new art movements.
The postwar period through the 1950s was the era of the avant-garde and art world movements. From Yoru-no-Kai formed with critic Kiyoteru Hanada, to Avant-garde Art Kenkyu-kai, Seiki-no-Kai, Gendai Geijutsu Kenkyusho, Art Club, Kokusai Design Committee, Kiroku Geijutsu-no-Kai and others, Okamoto was involved with a variety of movements and groups, some of which he led himself. Joining in these movements from a young age, Okamoto sometimes agreed and sometimes clashed with Hanada others as they continued to create art. The Taro Okamoto Museum of Art, Kawasaki has been collecting materials on these movements and the works of their artists since its opening, and here introduces a sampling of these postwar avant-gardists.
