“Modulation” is the fourth one man show of Hiroshige Fukuhara’s to be held as this gallery since 2010. He launched his career as an artist when still a university student, after being selected as a finalist for the Philip Morris Art Award and participating in a group show at PS1 MOMA, New York.

The major focus of this exhibition is a tableau over two meters in width that will be displayed on the central wall of the gallery. It depicts an image of horses amidst foliage and flowers, drawn freehand with pencil on a black gesso-colored canvas. From a distance, the work is but a field of black. However, when you move closer, the dynamic pencil drawings emerge from the darkness. This simple technique of drawing on a dark foundation allows the painting to be observed differently depending on the environment and circumstances. The exhibition also includes Fukuhara’s recent photographic works that depict images of natural landscapes somewhat akin to those that appears in the work of the 18th Century Romanticists. Fukuhara creates artwork that is always challenging to the eyes, albeit in a subtle way, and the dynamic worlds that lay half-hidden never cease to attract attention.
