The Sanno Festival of Hie Shrine has been unfailingly, grandly celebrated in the city center of Tokyo since the Edo era on even-numbered years, in alternation with the Kanda Festival. In special recognition of the inter-generational support of local shrine parishioners in carrying on this tradition (specifically that of the Bancho-Kojimachi and Nihonbashi-Kyobashi areas of Tokyo), this exhibition serves to honor the charm of the Sanno Festival through paintings and design elements, in addition to the tools and artifacts unique to each of the surrounding town councils. Further, a number of talks, workshops and walking tours will allow us to experience how Edo culture has been inherited over generations through the Sanno Festival.
