The Railway Art Museum

Taro Okamoto Museum of Art, Kawasaki
Finished
Contemporary artist Taro Okamoto celebrated the railroad as the ambition of a new age in the work “Yakushin” (Great Advance), a mural completed for the opening of the Sanyo Shinkansen bullet train at Okamoto Station, and in his design for the medal “Shuppatsu” (Departure) commemorating the privatization of the national railway. Blazing through the wilderness, the railway has opened up a new era allowing people to realize dreams, build cities, and form personal and cultural connections leading to all kinds of dramatic events. It is a point of pride for human civilization.

This exhibition offers an appreciation of the railway in a playful space bringing together train-themed works and large dioramas by Okamoto and contemporary artists including Paramodel, Taira Ichikawa, Rintaro Hara, Bunpei Kaku, and Takatsugu Kuriyama. Other corners reveal how artists of different eras, from Hiroshige Utagawa to Hiroshi Nakamura, Akira Yamaguchi, and Nao Fukushima, have portrayed the railroad. Posters, timetables, train models, logos, and video featuring railways across Japan are also on display, and visitors can ride a mini steam locomotive and take part in workshops and other events at this exhibition for all ages.

Artists: Taira Ichikawa, Paramodel, Rintaro Hara, Bunpei Kado, Takatsugu Kurihara, Taro Okamoto, Akira Yamaguchi, Hiroshi Nakamura, Hisashi Fukushima, Hiroshige Utagawa, Kunimasa Utagawa, Kaisyu Katsu, Kiyochika Kobayashi, Shinsui Ito, Minoru Sasakura
