The Agency for Cultural Affairs has been operating the Overseas Study Program for Artists (present name: Program of Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists) since 1967. The program helps young artists to attend training at universities and related organizations in other countries in order to foster talent that will support the future of Japan’s arts world. The program will soon celebrate its half-century anniversary. Since 1998, the “DOMANI: The Art of Tomorrow” exhibition has been held annually to provide an opportunity to display the achievements of the program, and the 18th annual exhibition was held at the National Art Center, Tokyo, in December 2015. Launched last year, “DOMANI plus” was started on an experimental basis as a way to exhibit themes and artists’ works that are not necessarily a good fit for large-scale spaces like the National Art Center. Last year it was held as part of Art Fair Tokyo, and this year we had the opportunity to hold it at 3331 Arts Chiyoda, which is located in Tokyo’s Kanda neighborhood.
A former junior high school, 3331 Arts Chiyoda’s activities are grounded in the local community in the Kanda-Akihabara area, organized across the several galleries that coexist in the space. The theme we chose for the exhibition held here is drawing. Since around 2000, young artists have been subjectively initiating and actively presenting drawings, positioned as media not for preliminary sketching, but where ideas are born. A wide generational range of artists’ examples of the practice will be examined in the exhibition. The pieces are not limited to paper media. All participating artists have spent an extended period of time overseas as part of the Program of Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists. In this five-person group exhibition, pioneer Nobuya Hitsuda (born 1941) is encircled by artists from the next generation, O JUN (born 1956) and Rieko Hidaka (born 1958), as well as Satoshi Kuribayashi (born 1968), and Saori Miyake (born 1975). Hidaka and Kuribayashi both began as nihonga (Japanese-style painting) artists and spent time in Germany, which provided the impetus for them to step into the field of contemporary art. O JUN and Kuribayashi both used the Overseas Study Program to spend time in a second country after long stays in Germany, gaining opportunities to experience culture in South America and Southeast Asia.
Through the theme of drawing, this will be an opportunity to encounter the forms these artists have cultivated over their varicolored careers and encounters with other cultures.
