Artists

Tomotsugu Manabe
Tomotsugu Manabe’s recent works have included enormous clay shelter-like sculptures big enough for people to enter, often featuring motifs of Japanese gods and good luck charms, regional products, and pre-historic Jomon artifacts. Here he presents larger-than-life “Kazari Maki” inspired by decorative rolled sushi that when cut into display the same faces, flowers, and other designs at any point. Manabe draws on a context of the history of sculpture and its principles (force applied toward the center, the surface and the interior, a focus on actions) and explores why humans are captivated by certain forms and actions, theorizing that within them lie a desire to shape the unconscious. The title of the exhibition also reflects the artist’s interest in a fundamental aspect of psychology that has existed size ancient times: scale. Just as he has magnified the scale of a common item, he has added 10,000 years to the present day. Incidentally, the Jomon era is thought to have begun 13,100 years ago.
