It is with mixed feelings that we wish to inform you that in the wake of the death of our proprietor Etsuro Ishihara in February, Zeit-Foto Salon will cease activities as a gallery space this coming December. We sincerely wish to thank all of you for your warm and long-lasting support for our gallery during its 38 years of operation since its establishment in 1978. Although we feel grateful for the various voices expressing regret about Zeit-Foto Salon’s closing, as Ishihara himself stated during his lifetime, the gallery owner entails being unified in both body and soul with the gallery. Thus, we are shutting this gallery based on the idea that we can no longer call this place “Zeit-Foto Salon” now that Ishihara is not with us anymore.

The idea of selecting just one artist for an exhibition to highlight Zeit-Foto Salon’s Grande Finale was impossible for us. We have held almost 400 exhibitions up to now. The various artists who have spent some time here with Ishihara were like friends to him.
Therefore, we have decided to exhibit all at once the works of over 100 photography artists with connections to Ishihara as the finale for these 38 years. In French, “Le bal” means ‘dance party.’ Using that as a title, we will be dividing the exhibition and works to be displayed into a total of three parts in line with the composition of Bruckner’s “Symphony No.9,” which Ishihara loved: Part 1: Maetoso, Part 2 Scherzo, and Part 3: Adagio cantabile.” Diverse works reflective both of Zeit-Foto Salon’s history and of the history of photography will decorously cover all the walls of the gallery during each period of the exhibition. Please come to experience first-hand the 38 year history of Zeit-Foto Salon and Etsuro Ishihara’s legacy.
