Shinako Saito
Expressed in installations of photography, embroidery, wall paintings, and furniture, the “playhouse” has been a theme of Tokyo-based artist Shinako Saito’s exhibitions since 2000. Here she incorporates childhood family portraits, dollhouses, and stickers taped to walls in a show exploring sexuality, violence, love, and memory on the conscious and subconscious levels. With humor and tension, Saito probes what lies below the surface of gender and social stereotypes, and the casual and intimate elements of her works transform into hints for examining feelings of sorrow, pleasure, frustration, and joy.
