Since opening in 1964, Yokohama Civic Art Gallery has held a variety of exhibitions, ranging from annual shows introducing contemporary Japanese art, to exchange exhibitions with sister cities, and solo shows for artists with connections to Yokohama. Through these exhibitions and the relationships it has built with artists, the museum has amassed a collection of some 1,300 works, including Nihonga paintings, oil paintings, prints, photography, sculpture, and more. Once a year it holds a special Collection Exhibition.

Taking “scenery” as its key concept, this year’s show presents around 76 works by 32 artists from the 1940s through the 1990s representing diverse expressions of scenery and landscapes in art through four categories: “Representational,” “Fantastical,” “Impressionistic,” and “Everyday.” Eight of the works feature scenes of Yokohama by Ryohei Yanagihara, who created manga and illustrations for the 1978 Yokohama Manga Festival.
