Invitation to Archives XIII: Tokyo Biennale ’70, Revisited

Keio University Art Center
Finished

Artists

Yusuke Nakahara, Christo, Kenji Inumaki et al.
In ‘The 10th International Art Exhibition of Japan’ (Tokyo Biennale), Yusuke Nakahara as general commissioner set a definingly critical theme, ‘Between Man and Matter’ and unveiled the works of 40 artists who embodied the newest trends in art around the world. With artists from various regions making their way to Japan and producing their works at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Gallery, this event came to be associated with a succession of international art exhibitions at the forefront of the avant-garde, held worldwide between 1969-1970.

There are various supporting records of the works and artists featured in this event, but on the other hands it appears little analysis has been provided upon the particulars of the exhibition itself. As a first step in the re-investigation of this show, the very placement of the works within the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Gallery is mapped and the events of over 45 years ago are brought into closer proximity.
