At first notice, Ryo Kawada seems to be depicting everyday scenes, yet there is often something indefinable about the people in his paintings. We can see that personal feelings and connections are not the subjects of his works, whose rough compositions give an unsettling feeling. Deliberate fictions are a part of Kawada’s process of putting motifs together, a practice borrowing from traditions in art history such as religious painting, portraiture, and still lifes lending deep significance to his works. The titles of this exhibition and its displayed paintings shed light on what Kawada is up to.
