Mirukusouko, The Coconuts
At the 2016 3331 Art Fair, “mirukusouko + The Coconuts” presented their artworks by selling them from the facade of a street stand. By employing the usual manners of a street vendor and applying its format on number of items, prices, materials and customer service, the artists aimed to open a crack in existing premises of the art world and bring in externality.
Each member of the group is either an artisan or an engineer with deep expertise and an ability to generate new artistic ideas. As with craftsmen groups of medieval age, there is no division of labor between artists and engineers in the design and implementation of their projects. This approach is not an “anti-art” political assertion, but rather an innovative practice of art. Tools created by their work are conceptions/experimental assumptions, or “Prospective Objects,” as described by Elie During in his thesis work Prototype.
