Cinderella in America: Works From the Masanao Kawata Collection

The Hibiya Library Museum
Finished
The story of Cinderella has many variations throughout the world. Versions by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm spread throughout Europe and later to America, where Cinderella came to embody the American Dream and its premise that anyone can achieve success through diligent effort.

With the full-fledged support of the antique picture book collector Masanao Kawata, this exhibition introducing the Cinderella who came to America presents valuable picture books and printings published in America in the 19th and 20th centuries. It also features a dress modeled after one from a century-old picture book, a dry plate animation, and more. Revisit the Cinderella story with 150 rare works, many of which can only be seen here.
