Tetsu Fusen
Tetsu Fusen is a Japanese-style nihonga painter with an unusual background. Though he was an artist highly praised for his ability, Fusen left the art scene in the postwar years, continuing to paint while wandering aimlessly for the remainder of his life. Only one retrospective of his work has been held at a museum to date, and this was 21 years ago. As a result many of his paintings are cloaked in mystery. Furthermore, the works themselves are also unusual. As a nihonga painter Fusen depicted common subjects such as Mount Fuji and the sea, but in creating a unique world with a combination of bird’s-eye perspective and miniature elements, his characteristically free-spirited approach produced works unlike those of any other artist. This exhibition, the first to be held in Tokyo, will present around 120 works, focusing mainly on representative pieces and newly-discovered works, as well as picture postcards and ceramics. Trace Fusen’s journey as a painter and discover the attraction of the works produced by this little-known artist.
