“Parplume Yobiko” is a cram school that was established by artist Yoichi Umetsu in Kanagawa, just outside of Tokyo. It recruits young people from throughout Japan to come together through SNS and join an art community that operates partially through residential activities. It challenges the extant art education system and infrastructure in Japan, and has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years for it’s unique philosophy and economical approach. This summer event organized by Umetsu presents artists that imbue their works with powerful drawing-like qualities. Stepping away from the ideologies espoused in art history, Umetsu attempts to manifest the exhibition space with a metaphysical connection that compliments the sensibilities of Parplume. The issues that Parplume addresses this summer will be touched on here, looking at subjects such as the self-referential customs of group exhibition formats, and the reinterpretation of the industrial dimensions and advertising-like aspects of art. A program of study will also be arranged through the Parplume Summer School.
