In Focus: Rodin’s “The Gates of Hell”

Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Auguste Rodin, Shigeo Anzai
With 2017 marking the 100th anniversary of the death of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840–1917), Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art, which holds one of Japan’s few Rodin collections, presents a series of mini-exhibitions focused on relationships between Rodin’s work and photography. Photography was born in the 19th century and many artists actively used it as a medium. Rodin was no exception – he had his work photographed, and from 1890 exhibited these images. “The Gates of Hell” is a set of sculptures Rodin spent the second half of his life working on. This exhibition reacquaints visitors with these sculptures through large-form, detailed photographs (facsimiles) of them taken while Rodin was alive, as well as up-close images from the National Museum of Western Art taken by Japanese photographer Shigeo Anzai.
