The invention of the Knirps folding umbrella

Matsuya Design Gallery
Finished
“Knirps” is a German word that refers to folding umbrellas. It is fair to say that the invention of this kind of umbrella was considered an impressive feat, coming at a time when such compact umbrellas were far from common place. The establishment of the Knirps company dates back to 1928, making it now 90 years old. Over the decades the company has refined its technology and designs, striving to improve their products in order to reach then point at which they find themselves today. The original creator of the telescopic frame was a person named Hans Haupt, who suffered with a war injury that made it difficult for him to carry both a walking stick and an umbrella. His solution was to carry a small umbrella in his pocket on days when it might rain. His initial designs are what developed into the current Knirps folding umbrella model. In addition to the mechanisms of these umbrella, it is the printed textiles that work to unify the beautiful and stylish design elements. This exhibition will introduce the structure and functions of these Knirps umbrellas, as well as the textiles they feature, through animation and other media.
