Satoshi Hashimoto
Hashimoto has created a lot of art through which he involves viewers and questions their role in the experience of art appreciation in the form of performances, actions, and instructions aimed at inducing the viewers’ own reactions. His sometimes unreasonable instructions and his actions that freely transcend any borders pose questions regarding our principles of existence. We usually think, speak, and act as if our actions are entirely the result of our own free will while, in fact, these behaviors are fundamentally influenced by someone or something.

This exhibition is composed of several dozen pieces of art such as three-dimensional artworks, texts, and performances, based on works from Hashimoto’s solo exhibitions “Everything and Others” (Liste 21, Basel, Jun. 2016) and the “Rolling Stone, Olympics, the Sun, the Moon, Cold Water” (Teratotera-Involve, Tokyo, Oct. 2016). One of the works that will be presented is “Pie Charts: Everything and Others,” which was created following research undertaken at Kunisaki peninsula in 2013 and informed by the work of Japanese philosopher Baien Miura. The work was first presented through the online exhibition “Kunisaki Genzo,” curated by Mizuki Endo. It is an artwork that expresses diverse divisions existing in the world through the medium of pie charts and will be shown here through the medium of aluminum plates. During the exhibition period, several performances and events will be held each week.
