Miwa Ishiba
In her early works Miwa Ishiba painted animals and plants with brush strokes like those used in Japanese painting, but since 2006 she has produced mainly portraits. Her Portrait “Haru” (2009) seems to have predicted the birth of her own child, as it can now be said to look reminiscent of her son, even though he was born after the work was produced. Ishiba’s portraits are mostly of children, depicting controlled feelings with delicate brushwork.
With this Exhibition, Ishiba attempts to create her own world in subdued colors and black lines applied with pencils and acrylic paint. Her earthy tone works remind the viewer of old book illustrations, like those by Arthur Rackham and Aubrey Vincent Beardsley. Ishiba produces several sketches for each work and takes time pursuing the world she wishes to express. Her portraits of children in various costumes seem to introduce characters in a story where their facial expressions and eyes are what tell the story.
