The seventh Azamino Photo Annual exhibition introducing contemporary photography presents the work of Takashi Arai, winner of the 2016 Kimura Ihei Award and other prestigious prizes. Arai works in the medium of daguerreotyping, an early form of photography. This process using single sheets of silver-plated copper often requires long exposures and is sensitive to weather and lighting conditions, resulting in images that do not so much capture single moments as accumulated spans of time.

Arai has used the special properties of daguerreotyping to create works concerning the Tohoku disasters, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and other contemporaneous and historical events heightening awareness of durations of time. Here he also presents new works: daguerreotype portraits of members of young generations taken with strobe lights in a series capturing moments lived by these young men and women. This fresh experiment in which he again applies technique to artistic theme marks a new direction for Arai.
