There exists a handbook for Japanese nihonga painting called “fun-pon.” Handbooks for drawing and painting were used by artists when they could not sketch from real objects. Serving as a paper specimen reference, and they were often used by artists in the Maruyama school. In this exhibition, works from one volume of Kakyo Kawabe’s “Sketches of Birds” series will be presented alongside stuffed specimens. Unlike other volumes of this series, the Kawabe drawings shown here are quick sketches made from living birds. While capturing precisely the details of a static specimen, these works express movement with exactitude, forming a perfect body of work on birds. In contrast, though the realistic quality in every detail of stuffed specimens made from real birds is guaranteed, the artificial shaping and posing of the forms is indispensable in making the birds look full of life. This exhibition is an opportunity to compare Kawabe’s nihonga works with specimens that rely equally on a balance of precise details and sketches of movement.
